Families

Datiscaceae

This is a family of the begonia order (Begoniales) of tropical and sub tropical trees (Octomeles, Tetrameles) and herbs (Datisca) of little economic value.  This family composed about 3 genera and 4 species.  The leaves are alternate, either pinnate or simple, and without stipules.  The flowers are either unisexual or bisexual.  The fruit is a membraneous capsule bearing seeds with a straight embryo and little or no endosperm.

Dilleniaceae

This large family contains 18 genera and 530 species of trees, shrubs or herbs, sometimes climbers.  The leaves are alternate, simple, entire, toothed or rarely pinnate; petioles with sheaths and without stipules or without sheaths and with lateral deciduous stipules.  The flowers are yellow or white, sometimes very large.

Dioscoreaceae

This family comprised of 6 genera and 750 species of shrubs, herbs or lianas.  Leaves alternate (usually), or opposite (rarely); usually spiral; petiolate; sheathing to non-sheathing; simple (usually), or compound; when compound, palmate (with three to six or more leaflets). Flowers aggregated in ‘inflorescences’; in panicles, in racemes, and in spikes.  The fruit is fleshy, or non-fleshy; dehiscent, or indehiscent; a capsule (usually), or a berry (Tamus), or a samara (Rajania). The seeds have oily endosperm and well differentiated embryo.

Dipterocarpaceae

This is a family of small to very lofty trees, in the tea order (Theales), comprising 22 genera and about 580 species. Most of the species are lofty trees with leathery, evergreen leaves and aromatic resins. Their clustered, fragrant flowers have five twisted, leathery petals. Dipterocarpus species provide a variety of products in addition to useful timber.
